Ways of making families/whānau and iwi welcome in the school

Te Mana Kōrero 3

  • What are some of the strategies that schools use to make families/whānau and iwi feel welcome in the school setting? How effective are these?

[Hiruharama School: by making sure the staffroom belongs to everyone, having kai on the table for everyone (“It’s just an extension of your own kitchen”); by inviting involvement in activities run by students; by meeting the whānau in their own setting, (e.g,. meals-on-wheels activity); by getting parents involved in computers/technology at school.

Tologa Bay Area School: by inviting involvement in activities that celebrate achievement, e.g., Nati awards; by basing the curriculum on topics and learning pathways that the whānau have expertise in so that they can participate confidently]
