Ka Hikitia - Managing for Success
In Te Mana Kōrero 1, Russell Bishop talks extensively about the research he and others have undertaken to identify what Māori students are looking for, in terms of an effective teacher. (This illustrates the findings of his Te Kotahitanga research.)
Across the resources, and particularly in Te Mana Kōrero 2, there are many examples of culturally responsive and mutually respectful relationships between teachers and Māori students.
School leaders and teachers can identify examples of these relationships, explore what they look like in action, consider what teachers have done to form and maintain these relationships (including the understandings they developed), and analyse how such relationships might enhance student engagement and achievement. At the same time, they could consider the comments that Russell Bishop makes about what Māori students are looking for, in terms of an effective teacher. This will be a way of inquiring into how they relate to their Māori students.
To help the facilitator, some of the information and ideas that the group could identify and/or discuss when exploring the questions are suggested in the next section: What Māori students are looking for in their teachers.
