Ngaruawahia High School

In this story Ngaruawahia High School students, teachers, the principal, senior leaders and Te Kotahitanga facilitators discuss how students’ NCEA results improved dramatically through a process of using evidence, acceptance of shared responsibility and implementation of teacher and student goals.

Students’ voices affirm how the difference in teachers’ practices impacted on their achievement.

Questions / Things to think about

  1. How are you making sure that your school is focussed on the achievement your Māori students?
  2. What evidence are you using to ensure this focus is maintained? What is the evidence telling you about your progress?
  3. Is responsibility for this focus shared across the whole school and management?
  4. How do the school structures support this focus? How do they block this focus?
