He Kākano update

This weeks Education Gazette featured an article on the progress of the He Kākano leadership programme.

He Kākano has been going for two years now working with 89 schools. In this article, Paora Howe, the programmes’ professional operations manager, takes stock of the progress made over the past two years.

Some of the evidence of improvement so far includes senior leaders:

  • practicing cultural responsiveness
  • strategies for addressing Māori learner achievement and success in a more cohesive and coherent manner
  • using data in a much more focused way
  • using co-constructive approaches
  • listening to and analysing Māori learners’ and teachers’ voices,
  • developing greater whānau awareness of what is going on in the school.

Questions / Things to think about

  1. How do the senior leaders in your school practice cultural responsiveness?
  2. How does the data and strategies for learning that your school has in place address Māori learner achievement specifically?
  3. Does your school analyse Māori learner data specifically?
  4. Can you see ways that your strategies and approaches can be co-constructed with staff, students, and whānau?
