Te Kura Kaupapa o Māori Manawatu

In this story Debbie Marshall-Lobb, Principal, Te Kura Kaupapa o Māori Manawatu, discusses how relationships are everything and how the principal plays a really powerful role in terms of shaping culture.

Debbie introduced Quality Learning Circles (QLCs) to the kura, specifically to get professional colleagues to enter into dialogue and put greater focus on the learning and teaching. The QLC concept fits in with the Māori-medium framework of sharing ideas and being open and transparent.

Questions / Things to think about

  1. What are the relationships like in your school? Is the majority of conversation housekeeping?
  2. Are there opportunities at your school for open dialogue?
  3. Can you see how QLCs could work in your school?
