Māori Language Education Framework

This framework identifies government's investment priorities for Māori language (in both Māori medium and English medium education) over a 10 year period, in order to provide a coherent approach.

The framework incorporates key goals and actions from the ministry’s Māori education strategy, Ka Hikitia.

The priorities for action in the Māori Language Education Framework are to:

  • strengthen processes for establishing Māori medium schools
  • increase the number of quality teachers proficient in Māori language and able to effectively teach the Māori medium curriculum
  • strengthen Māori language education research, and build an evidence base for mātauranga Maōri
  • strengthen partnerships with iwi, and other Māori education groups, to improve Māori student achievement
  • increase the visibility of Māori language in schools, and in the media, to promote its relevance.
